Voyageur Du Temps

Background

Located a short walk from downtown Los Altos, Voyageur du Temps (VDT) is an artisan bakery and café serving world-class bread, pastries and coffee.

Voyageur du Temps, which means time traveler in French, was the vision of owner and local resident, Rie Rubin.

As the name suggests, Rie’s vision was a café that transported people back in time. A place that moved between tradition and modernity—that drew on the classic values of cooking and baking, but with a contemporary twist. Rie reached out to Character to help bring that vision life.

Character was tasked with designing and producing all elements of the VDT brand and café experience.

The goal was to develop an identity as beautiful and unexpected as the experience itself. Character’s studies explored the tension between the classic and the contemporary, the rustic and the refined.

The selected “V” logo identity was inspired by a Roman numeral five, found on an old clock in a French train station. This speaks perfectly both to the café’s theme of time travel and its location—an old Los Altos train station.

The photography art direction is natural and real. It captures the care and craftsmanship of the baking process and emphasizes VDT’s reliance on traditional baking techniques and use of the finest natural ingredients.

Once the VDT design language was established, Character extended it across the website, product packaging, interior and exterior signage, menu designs, merchandise, staff uniforms and business applications. Character carefully sourced all of the production vendors  to ensure that final deliverables exceeded expectations.

The cafe opened its doors to the public in March, 2014.
